How pity works
Genshin, Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero run the same pity engine under different names. Here's the whole system — base rate, soft pity, hard pity, and the 50/50 — in one place.

Quick answer
Every pull has a 0.6% base chance at a 5★. Around pull 74 the rate ramps up sharply (community-fitted at roughly +6% per pull), and pull 90 is a guaranteed 5★. Each 5★ has a 50% chance to be the featured rate-up; losing that coin flip guarantees the next 5★ is the rate-up. Run your exact pity through the pity calculator to see it applied.
The exact soft-pity curve has never been officially published — values here are community-fitted and marked [VERIFY] on the methodology page.
The four layers
- Base rate (0.6%). Every pull is independent — ten pulls give only ~5.8% total, which is why "I did ten pulls for the pity" is usually disappointment.
- Soft pity (~74+). The per-pull rate climbs every pull past ~74. Most 5★s land between pulls 74 and 84; the ramp is why average pity sits near 62, not 45.
- Hard pity (90). The guarantee. Budgeting by hard pity is pessimistic on average and correct for worst cases — which is exactly how a budget should work.
- The 50/50. Half the time your 5★ is the rate-up; lose, and the next 5★ is guaranteed. Long-run odds of the rate-up sit near 55% under this model.
What carries over — and what doesn't
- Carries: pity count and the 50/50 guarantee, across banners of the same type, indefinitely. Switching banners never resets pity.
- Doesn't carry: pity between banner types (character vs weapon/light-cone/W-engine), and between games — each account-game combination counts separately. [VERIFY]
